Starting therapy can feel uncertain—for kids and parents. This guide walks you through the first three play therapy sessions for ages 7–12 at Sound Mind Counseling & Neurotherapy in Mooresville (Lake Norman), and explains exactly how parents are involved so progress continues at home and school.

We serve families across Troutman, Davidson, Cornelius, Statesville, Sherrills Ford, and Huntersville with in-person appointments and secure telehealth consults.

Why Play Therapy for Ages 7–12?

School-age kids learn and communicate through doing—stories, art, games, and role-play—while they’re still building language for big feelings. Play therapy creates a safe, structured space to practice regulation skills, try new responses, and strengthen confidence and connection.

Common goals: handling worry or anger, smoother homework/bedtime transitions, fewer after-school meltdowns, better peer problem-solving, and school stress support.

Visit 1: Foundations—Trust, Curiosity, & A Simple Plan

Parent consult (brief): We start by confirming goals (e.g., “use a calm-down plan when frustrated,” “start homework with less conflict”). We’ll review history, routines, and any school info you’d like to share (teacher notes, IEP/504, etc.).

Child session:

  • Warm welcome + tour of the playroom; kid chooses a starter activity.

  • Check-in language (feelings scale, “engine speed,” colors/zones) so your child can signal how they’re doing.

  • Observation through play to notice strengths, triggers, and motivation.

  • Take-home: one tiny step—e.g., a 60-second breathing practice or a 2-step after-school transition.

Goal of Visit 1: Comfort + clarity. Your child leaves knowing what sessions feel like; you leave with one tiny routine to try at home.

Visit 2: First Skill—Regulation You Can Use Today

We choose one foundational skill matched to your child’s needs (examples: paced breathing, “anchor spot” imagery, sensory reset, body scan).

In session (kid-friendly):

  • Practice the skill inside play (story, art, or a cooperative game).

  • Name when to use it (“before homework,” “after recess,” “when the worry shows up”).

  • Track success with a simple visual (stickers, points, or a checkmark chart).

Parent check-in (brief): You get a quick demo and a micro-practice to use at home (30–60 seconds counts).

Goal of Visit 2: Your child can use one skill with a little coaching. You know when to prompt it and what it should look like.

Visit 3: Applying the Skill—Challenges, Choices, & Routines

We now apply the skill in small, real-life challenges (frustrating puzzle, turn-taking, timed task, or light “what if” scenarios) and add a tiny decision script:

  • Notice → Name → Skill → Next step
(“I notice my engine is high → I’m in the yellow zone → 4 breaths → start math 1 problem at a time.”)

Home & school bridge:

  • Pick one routine to attach the skill to (after-school snack → 3 breaths → start planner).

  • If you request it, we’ll share a short note you can pass to teachers about the skill language your child knows.

Goal of Visit 3: Your child uses the skill with a nudge, and you have one routine where it reliably fits.

How Parents Are Involved (Without Taking Over)

  • Short, scheduled check-ins every 3–4 sessions to review goals and adjust routines.

  • One micro-habit at a time (keep it tiny so it sticks).

  • Name effort, not perfection (“I saw you pause and breathe—great start”).

  • Share school updates so we can align with teachers or support IEP/504 conversations (only with your permission).

  • Link to Child & Teen Counseling page.

  • Link to School-Related Struggles/Executive Function page if you have one.

How Long Before We See Changes?

Every child is different, but many families notice small improvements in 3–6 sessions with consistent practice. Typical care ranges 8–16 sessions, reviewed together.

Consistency beats perfection. Weekly or biweekly sessions + tiny practices at home usually outperform “intense” but inconsistent efforts.

Do parents sit in?
Usually, your child meets individually, with brief parent check-ins. For some goals, we may include you to model or practice skills.

That’s okay. We start with play and choice, build trust, and use kid-friendly language to make it safe to try new skills.

Do you take insurance?
We’re in-network with Aetna and Blue Cross NC, offer self-pay, and can provide documentation for out-of-network benefits.

What ages do you see for play therapy?
We see kids starting at age 7 through 12 for play therapy, and offer teen counseling for older students.
