Child Therapy in Mooresville, NC

Kids don’t need to be “fixed”—they need to feel safe, seen, and supported. At Sound Mind Counseling & Neurotherapy, we help children ages 10–12 navigate big feelings, behavior changes, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, and school stress through developmentally appropriate, evidence-based care. We partner closely with caregivers so progress at home and school becomes easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you see children under 10?

At this time, the youngest clients we see at Sound Mind are age 10. Our child therapy program specifically serves ages 10–12, with developmentally appropriate approaches that match their attention span and emotional readiness. If you’re looking for therapy support for a younger child, we’re happy to recommend trusted local play-therapy or developmental specialists in the Lake Norman area.

Will I be in the room?

Sometimes — and we’ll always be transparent about when. Early sessions often include caregivers as your child gets comfortable and we map their story together. As trust builds, we balance child-only time (where they can speak freely) with brief parent check-ins to share strategies, observations, and progress. You’re a critical part of the work; we just calibrate when you’re in the room versus when your child needs their own space.

What about medication?

We don’t prescribe — Sound Mind is a counseling practice, not a psychiatric one. If you’re considering medication for your child, we can coordinate care with your pediatrician, a child psychiatrist, or an integrative medicine provider. Therapy and medication often work best when they’re aligned, and we’re happy to be part of that team.

How long does child therapy take?

It varies based on your child’s needs and what they’re working through. Many families see meaningful changes within 8–12 sessions, especially for school stress, anxiety, or behavior shifts. Complex concerns — like trauma history, ADHD with significant emotional dysregulation, or major life changes — may benefit from longer-term work. We review progress with you every few weeks and adjust the pace together.

Is neurofeedback required?

No — neurofeedback is always optional. Some families choose it as a supportive add-on for kids navigating attention, sleep, or self-regulation challenges, especially alongside ADHD or anxiety work. Neurofeedback works at a brain-training level that can complement therapy, but it’s never a prerequisite. We’ll help you decide whether it’s a fit during your initial consultation.

Do you offer EMDR for children?

Yes — when it’s clinically appropriate and at a child’s pace. EMDR for kids uses structured, gentle reprocessing of scary, stuck, or traumatic memories with strong caregiver collaboration. We always start with stabilization — building safety, regulation, and trust — before moving into EMDR processing. Some kids benefit deeply from EMDR; others do better with play-based or expressive approaches first. We’ll tailor the approach to what your child actually needs.

Do you take insurance for child therapy?

Yes — and we’ll help you understand your benefits and costs up front, before sessions begin. Insurance coverage varies by plan, especially for specialized services like neurofeedback. During your intake, we’ll verify benefits and walk you through what’s covered, what’s out-of-pocket, and your options for both private-pay and insurance-based care.

Can my child do therapy via telehealth?

Yes — many of our child therapy sessions happen via secure telehealth across North Carolina and Maryland. For ages 10–12, we adapt the format to keep things engaging: shared screens, drawing or writing together, age-appropriate games, and built-in movement breaks. Some kids actually find telehealth more comfortable than office-based therapy. We’ll talk during your intake about whether in-person or telehealth fits best for your child’s specific needs.
