FAQs

How long does adult therapy take?

It varies depending on what you’re working through. Many adults notice meaningful shifts within 8–12 sessions, especially when the focus is anxiety, life transitions, or building specific skills. Complex trauma, attachment wounds, or long-standing depression often benefit from longer-term work — but that work tends to feel sustainable because we’re addressing root causes, not just symptoms. We pace it together, and you’re never on a clock.

Is EMDR right for me?

EMDR is a powerful option for adults working through trauma, anxiety, panic, grief, or stuck negative beliefs about themselves. During your initial sessions, we’ll talk through your readiness, current support systems, and goals to decide whether EMDR is the right starting point. Sometimes we begin with stabilization or IFS work first, then move into EMDR when your system is ready. The right approach is the one that fits where you are now — not where you think you should be.

What if I feel “numb” or “overwhelmed”?

This is incredibly common, and it’s something we know how to work with. We always start with stabilization — grounding skills, body-based regulation, and gentle pacing — so therapy doesn’t add to your overwhelm. Numbness is often a protective response that has been keeping you functional, not a sign something is wrong with you. We honor it, build capacity, and only go deeper when your nervous system is ready.

Do you prescribe medication?

No — Sound Mind is a counseling practice, not a psychiatric one. If medication is part of your care or you’re considering it, we’ll coordinate with your primary physician or psychiatric prescriber for integrated care. Therapy and medication often work best when they’re aligned, and we’re happy to be part of that team.

Is neurofeedback required?

No. Neurofeedback is always optional, and many adults work with us without ever using it. For those who do add it, neurofeedback supports attention, sleep, stress tolerance, and emotional regulation at a brain-training level that complements therapy. We’ll help you decide whether it’s a fit during your initial assessment.

Do you offer faith-integrated counseling?

Yes — for clients who want it, we can integrate biblical principles, faith perspectives, and prayer into the therapy process. We’re equally comfortable working with clients of all backgrounds without faith integration. Our approach to Christian counseling is grace-filled, emotionally intelligent, and never preachy — and you set the level of integration that feels right for you.

What if I’ve never been to therapy before?

That’s incredibly common — many of our clients are first-timers. You don’t need to know what you want to talk about, what diagnosis you have, or what approach is right for you. We’ll guide you through it, starting with a brief consultation to understand what’s been hard and what you’re hoping for. The first few sessions are about getting to know you and what you need — no pressure, no script, no wrong way to do it.
