Depression Counseling in Mooresville, NC
Depression can look like low energy, irritability, numbness, loss of interest, or feeling stuck. We help children (10+), teens, and adults find relief and momentum with evidence-based therapy—ACT, IFS-informed care, EMDR when helpful, and optional neurofeedback for sleep and nervous-system regulation. Together we’ll build small, doable steps that add up to real change.

How Depression Counseling Works Here

Approaches We Use
ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) – Skills to unhook from harsh thoughts, reconnect to values, and take doable steps.IFS-Informed “Parts” Work – Meet critical, hopeless, or protective parts with compassion; increase self-leadership.
EMDR – When painful experiences or beliefs (“I’m not good enough”) fuel depression, EMDR can help reprocess and soften their impact.
Neurofeedback (optional) – Brain-based training some clients add to support sleep quality, energy, and regulation—often making therapy skills stick more easily. Learn more on our Neurofeedback page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you treat mild, moderate, and severe depression?
Yes. We tailor care to where you are — gentler stabilization and skill-building for milder presentations, deeper work using EMDR or IFS when depression feels more entrenched, and close coordination with your physician or psychiatrist when medication or a higher level of care is clinically indicated. We’ll always be honest with you about what we can and cannot offer based on what you need.
Do you only teach coping skills, or do you go deeper?
Both. We start with practical skills — behavioral activation, sleep support, and gentle daily routines — to help you feel less stuck in the day-to-day. Then, when you’re ready, we go deeper using IFS-informed work and EMDR to address the underlying roots: harsh inner critics, “I’m not good enough” beliefs, or past experiences that have been quietly fueling the depression for years.
Can neurofeedback help with depression?
Many of our clients find that adding neurofeedback supports sleep, energy, and nervous system regulation — which often makes therapy progress steadier and more sustainable. Neurofeedback works at a brain level that complements (rather than replaces) therapy, especially when fatigue, sleep disruption, or chronic dysregulation are part of the depression picture. It’s always optional, and we’ll help you decide whether it fits your situation during your initial assessment.
How long does depression counseling take?
It varies depending on what’s underneath. Many people notice meaningful change within 8–12 sessions when depression is more recent or situational. Longer-standing depression — especially when it’s tied to trauma, attachment patterns, or chronic stress — often benefits from longer-term work, but the change tends to be more lasting because we’re addressing the roots, not just the symptoms.
Do you prescribe medication?
No — Sound Mind is a counseling practice, not a psychiatric one. If you’re considering medication, we’ll coordinate with your primary physician or psychiatric prescriber to support an integrated plan. Therapy and medication often work best when they’re aligned, and we’re happy to be part of that team.
Do you offer depression counseling for children?
Yes — for children ages 10–12, we use developmentally appropriate approaches including play and expressive methods, parent coaching, and routines that support sleep and connection. EMDR is available for kids when clinically indicated. The youngest clients we see at Sound Mind are age 10. If you’re looking for support for a younger child, we’re happy to recommend trusted local play-therapy providers in the Lake Norman area.
Do you offer couples counseling when one partner is depressed?
Yes. When one or both partners are navigating depression, couples counseling can help by addressing how the depression is affecting the relationship and how the relationship can become a source of support rather than additional stress. We can also include family sessions as part of an individual’s plan when that’s helpful, especially for child or teen depression.
Can therapy help if I’m too tired to do anything?
Yes — and this is exactly what we’re trained for. When you’re depressed, even small steps can feel impossible, and traditional advice (“just exercise!” “make a schedule!”) can land like a weight rather than help. We start where you actually are, with tiny, doable practices that meet you in the fatigue rather than fight against it. Our job is to help you find momentum, not to push.
