Frequently Asked Questions
Do you see pre-teens?
This page focuses on teens ages 13–17. We also see children ages 10–12 — visit our child therapy page for that age group. The youngest clients we see at Sound Mind are age 10. If you’re looking for therapy support for a younger child, we’re happy to recommend trusted local providers in the Lake Norman area.
How involved are parents in teen therapy?
We share high-level progress, strategies, and parenting tools — without breaching your teen’s privacy. Teens need confidential space to build trust with their therapist; that trust is what makes the work effective. We always involve caregivers when there are safety concerns or when parent collaboration would meaningfully accelerate progress, but the day-to-day session content stays between your teen and their therapist.
How long does teen therapy take?
It varies based on what your teen is working through. Many teens notice meaningful change within 8–12 sessions, especially when the focus is anxiety, school stress, or specific skill-building. Deeper concerns — trauma, depression, attachment patterns, or chronic ADHD-related struggles — often benefit from longer-term work. We review progress with your teen (and with you, when appropriate) every few weeks and adjust the plan together.
Do you offer EMDR for teens?
Yes — when it’s clinically appropriate and with careful preparation. EMDR for teens uses structured, paced reprocessing of stuck memories or beliefs, with clear stabilization beforehand and caregiver collaboration when needed. We always assess readiness first, focusing on safety and current support systems. Some teens benefit from EMDR right away; others need more foundational work first, and we’ll be honest with you about what we recommend.
Is neurofeedback required?
No — neurofeedback is always optional. Some families add it as a supportive tool when their teen is navigating attention, sleep, or self-regulation challenges, especially alongside ADHD or anxiety work. Neurofeedback works at a brain-training level that complements therapy, but it’s never a prerequisite. We’ll help you decide whether it’s a fit during your initial consultation.
Do you see families?
Yes. We can include family sessions as part of your teen’s care when it’s clinically helpful — for example, when communication patterns at home are reinforcing the struggle, when a family transition is part of what your teen is working through, or when caregivers need scripts and strategies they can use consistently. Family sessions are usually short and focused, woven in alongside individual teen work.
Do you take insurance for teen therapy?
Yes — and we’ll help you understand your benefits and costs up front, before sessions begin. Insurance coverage varies by plan, especially for specialized services like neurofeedback. During intake, we’ll verify benefits and walk you through what’s covered, what’s out-of-pocket, and your options for both private-pay and insurance-based care.
Do you offer teen therapy via telehealth?
Yes — we offer secure telehealth for teens across North Carolina and Maryland (we’re licensed in both states). Many teens actually prefer telehealth because they can attend from their own room, between school activities, without the commute. We also offer in-person sessions at our Mooresville office, and many families combine the two. We’ll help you decide what fits your teen best.
